My beautiful friend Jane

Each week we are capturing words of wisdom from women, from many different walks of life, who we think are rocking their age in their own unique way. Our favourite quotes will be put in a Rock My Age depository where we/future generations of women can dig into for hope, inspiration and guidance. We hope you enjoy and unlike the general media we aren’t revealing women’s ages as we don’t think it’s relevant.

Rock my Age in conversation with Jane Kirkup, head of sales and marketing at GreenAcres Cemeteries and Ceremonial Parks in West Sussex in the UK. She plays a key role in promoting multi-faith services for funerals and weddings in serene woodland surroundings for everyone in the community.

Name three things that are good about the age you are in right now?

Just knowing that I can trust my instinct. All of us know when someone is lying to us, or generally trying to “pull the wool over our eyes” . I now have the confidence to act on that.

Realising that life isn’t a competition. We all bring value in different ways, the greater the difference, the greater the value.

And understanding that asking the right questions is often more important than knowing the right answers.

What is your number one piece of advice that you’d give to your 18 year old self?

Be clear about your own values, surround yourself with people who enhance your life and never be afraid to walk away from those who bring drama to your door.

Has your style changed over the years - if so how?

My dress style has always been classic with a little edge. Simple, clean cut, smooth lines. You know when you feel good in an outfit and I believe this brings out the good in you. I’m a collaborative person and enjoy sharing and evolving ideas (and clothes) with others

What are the three things you couldn’t live without?

My tribe - my son, my love, my mother and a collection of dearest friends

Yoga and meditation - daily grounding replenishes and strengthens me. It reduces stress and helps me look and feel younger.

Good quality shoes - my feet refuse to be treated badly anymore.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

Deep down I’m a jeans girl, still love a good quality, well-fitting pair of jeans. Combined with the right top and jacket they can take you literally anywhere.
